Benefits of Massage


Did you know that there are two things that help people with trauma in their past? They are: telling their stories, and getting a massage. I am a massage therapist, and in my career I’ve come to realize there are many benefits of massage. Massage is not just for the wealthy or athletes anymore, it is for anyone and everyone. I have clients ranging in age from 13 to 92, from all walks of life. I am very passionate about massage therapy, and the benefits to be had from it. No longer is massage a luxury, but a necessity. The best thing in the world is when I can hear a client say they’re pain free after they’ve had a massage. But, massage is more than just pain relief. Benefits of massage include: reduced stress, better posture, help with insomnia, reduced pain, and improved circulation.

Massage helps with Stress

Ah, stress. The truly silent killer. In our fast paced culture, we rarely take the time for ourselves to breathe and receive. In this Western world, life moves at such a fast pace that our cortisol levels are chronically spiked. Cortisol is the stress hormone, which is released by the adrenal glands. Chronic stress is linked to: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide – all leading causes of death. Shouldn’t we be doing all we can to relieve some of this stress?

Massage Improves Postural Alignment

Most people that come in to see me for a massage are carrying tension in their neck and upper back, and this can be linked to bad posture. We are constantly on our computers and phones, hunched over and uncomfortable. Over time, the joints and muscles habitually remain contracted due to this postural misalignment and can lead to chronic arthritis and sometimes the need for interventions such as surgery. Receiving regular massage therapy (weekly, biweekly, or monthly)  can help release these contracted muscles and prevent you from becoming permanently hunched over when you reach old age.

Massage reduces Insomnia

Around 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Sleep is a huge part of someone’s health, and not getting enough sleep can affect your mood, your work performance, your concentration, as well as many other things. Some studies suggest that massage can help boost serotonin levels, especially when combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Serotonin in turn helps produce melatonin, the sleep hormone. Massage also improves sleep quality by putting your body into parasympathetic mode.

Massage therapy Reduces Pain

Massage is known to reduce pain by reducing painful contractions and spasms. By softening and stretching the soft tissue, massage therapy lengthens the muscle fibers and re-trains your body to remain in the relaxed state. I have patients that come in for nerve pain and for such disorders as fibromyalgia and even ehlers-danlos syndrome (a disorder that makes the ligaments and tendons weak and painful). Massage can help relieve all kinds of pain, with all kinds of techniques and levels of pressure. It doesn’t have to hurt to work!

Improve Circulation

Good circulation is an essential part of good health. Good circulation improves blood flow, lowers blood pressure, and it raises the oxygen levels in your body. Massage can help with good circulation by using techniques like kneading and petrissage to move blood through stagnant or congested areas, and then letting new blood flow in. Massage also flushes out lactic acid build up and improves lymph fluid flow!
