Weight Loss Obstacle #1: Low-Calorie, Low-Energy Foods
Many patients believe that strictly controlling fat and calorie intake is the key to diet success. We typically see these clients fall into a pattern of eating low-energy, low-nutrient snacks, but this approach can lead to overeating due to excessive hunger and actually promote fat storage as the body switches into starvation mode. Meals and snacks must be nutritionally balanced and provide healthy fats, dietary fiber, and protein.
Weight Loss Obstacle #2: Mindless Eating
In today’s busy, fast-paced society, many of us are forced to eat at our desks or while driving where very little of our focus can be directed upon the food itself. This problem, often referred to as “mindless eating,” can strongly interfere with our ability to feel satisfied with our food. Over time, this mindless approach can interfere with our hunger cues, leading us to eat out of habit, because we are bored, or in response to an emotional cue. For many clients who try and make a conscious effort with their food choices, mindless eating can be the hidden culprit behind unwanted weight gain.

Weight Loss Obstacle #3: Hormone Imbalances
Endocrine abnormalities, specifically in both thyroid and adrenal hormones, can significantly impair the body’s ability to lose or maintain weight. The thyroid influences the metabolic activity of every cell in the body. Depressed thyroid activity can result in weight gain and elevations in blood lipids and blood sugar.
Cortisol’s main role is to physiologically prepare the body to deal with a stressful experience. As part of its mechanism of response, cortisol secretion promotes immunosuppression, an increase in blood sugar, and protein and fat metabolism. Over time, chronically elevated cortisol levels can lead to weight gain, specifically abdominal weight gain, and decreased resistance to infections.
Weight Loss Obstacle #4: Untreated Food Allergies
It is estimated that nearly 95% of food sensitivities are delayed IgG mediated reactions. These sensitivities can result in chronic inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract and interfere with intestinal barrier function. The body often tries to deal with this irritation by retaining water to dilute the offending particles, resulting in toxin retention and stimulation of pro-inflammatory activity. It’s believed that this combination of edema and inflammation may contribute to the weight struggles that are often seen with food sensitivities.
There’s also some evidence that certain allergenic foods may contribute to food addiction. Exorphins are the partially digested compounds in food allergens that may have opioid, endorphin-releasing effects. These clients become addicted to the mood elevation or “high” they get from eating the allergenic food, commonly leading to overconsumption and binge eating.
