What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of alternative medicine therapy commonly referred to as energy healing. It is a very established healing tradition which originated in Japan in the late 1800’s. Reiki is translated as “universal energy” and it is said to involve the transfer of healing energy from the Practitioner’s palms to their patient. Many hospitals in the US and Europe offer Reiki services to patients.

The theory behind Reiki and other forms of energy healing is that the body has a vital energy which fuels our physiological and neurological processes. This energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or possibly emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can give rise to physical and mental symptoms. Common symptoms of energy blockages are headaches, anxiety, pain, and digestive complaints. Energy work restores the flow of energy and removes blockages in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure, but without the use of needles or pressure points. By improving the flow of energy within the body Reiki can promote relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing, and reduce the other symptoms of illness.

What happens in a Reiki session?

Reiki is a gentle hands-on technique that is performed while you are fully clothed and laying down on a comfortable treatment table. Similar to the environment during a massage therapy session, you will enjoy soft music and a dimly lit peaceful room.

While you rest comfortably, your Reiki master will place her hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand positions. Each position is held for between 2 and 5 minutes or until she feels the energy shift in that area. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body and focused over areas of pain or over certain organ systems to improve function.

If there is a particular injury, such as a burn, the hands may be held just above the wound. Reiki is fantastic to speed healing of burns or scars.

While the practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body, the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, the practitioner feels warmth travel through their hands. As the recipient, you may feel warmth or a tingling sensation as well, indicating that energy is moving and blood circulation is improved.

When the practitioner feels that the heat, or energy, felt in their hands has abated, they will remove their hands and may place them over a different area of the body.

How does Reiki feel?

A session with an experienced Reiki master feels like a profound healing experience. Most people report feeling deeply relaxed or even falling asleep. Your body feels free of tension, and you may feel a sensation of warmth or energy flow. After your session, you may feel calmer than usual or perhaps more energized than usual.

Energy work such as Reiki can be received regularly, and this is recommended for overcoming specific symptoms. A weekly session will allow you to make progress in alleviating your issue. If you are receiving Reiki as part of a wellness maintenance plan, monthly visits are perfect for maintaining your feeling of balance and serenity.
